CA Tint Law
California Window Tint Law — Plain English.
We'll walk you through the legal, best-looking options for your car. Here's what the law says.
XPEL CertifiedLifetime Warranty99.9% UV ProtectionTrusted Since 1991XPEL Dealer Award WinnerSignal-Safe Film
The short version
- Rear and back-side windows: any darkness is legal.
- Front side windows (driver / passenger): must allow at least 70% of light through (70% VLT or lighter).
- Windshield: non-reflective tint allowed on the top strip above the manufacturer's AS-1 line only.
Medical exemptions
California allows a medical exemption for darker front-side film with a signed letter from a licensed physician or surgeon. Bring the letter to your install and we'll spec the right film.
The smart play
We often install a 70% ceramic film on front windows — legal, nearly invisible, and it still blocks up to 88–98% of infrared heat. Rear windows can go as dark as you want.
